The biggest actual news is that the Verizon iPhone will feature hotspot capability. You’ll be able to tether up to five devices to the phone and use it to connect to the internet. There was no word on the pricing for this capability, or indeed of any pricing on the Verizon end. Verizon currently offers unlimited data plans on its smartphones for $30. This was the only new feature announced to distinguish Verizon from AT&T.
The other thing you’re going to be hearing a lot about from the tech press and especially AT&T is that the Verizon iPhone will run on the 3G CDMA network, iphone video converter, rather than the newer, faster 4G LTE network. Currently LTE usage is limited to dongles and personal Wifi devices. When the Motorola Xoom (a tablet) was announced at CES, Verizon said it would get a free upgrade to LTE later in the year. The CDMA network is slower than LTE, but it’s in more places (LTE is currently in 38 major US markets, but Verizon promises to “blanket” the country over the year). The big downside of CDMA is that you can’t use data while you’re on a call: it’s one or the other. You will be hearing about this endlessly from AT&T until the LTE iPhone comes out.
The big question now is parity. When Apple announces the iPhone 5, will it come out for both carriers at the same time, or will it be a case of AT&T in the fall, Verizon in the winter? My guess is that we’ll see them come out at the same time, video to ipad, but it’s now a question of engineering the carrier technology…unless, dvd to mpeg converter for mac, as rumored, Apple has a dual-band chip in the works that will let it work on both types of network at the same time. |
