Submitted 2010-11-22 23:44:12 The National Gallery of Art is a top destination for fine art connaisseurs, culture lovers, and travelers from all over the world. Established in 1937, the museum was open as a free art viewing gallery to people of the United States by a joint resolution of the United States Congress. The museum was constructed using funds granted by the United States government and initially outfitted with a substantial art collection donated by Andrew W. Mellon. The Gallery's collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, medals, and decorative arts traces the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present. The National Gallery of Art is located in the National Mall, an open-area national park in downtown Washington, D.C..
Five must-see sights at the National Gallery of Art include:
1. The Sacrament of the Last Supper - A depiction of Jesus and the last Supper by surrealist painter, Salvador Dali created in a combination of what seems a classic Christian theme with the jarring techniques of Surrealism. This painting took Dali nine months to complete and is one of his most popular compositions.
2. A Girl with a Watering Can - An famous impressionist painting by Auguste Renoir from 1876. The work was apparently painted in Monet's famous garden in Argenteuil, France. This painting was one of Renoir's earliest works, created when he was struggling for money which led him to focus on painting portraits in hopes of increasing sales.
3. Ginevra de' Benci - A painting by Leonardo da Vinci of a female aristocrat from 15th century Florence admired for her intelligence by Florentine contemporaries. She is the subject of one of only about 17 existing paintings attributed and admired for da Vinci's portrayal of her temperament. This painting was purchased for the record amount of $5 million dollars by the National Gallery of Art in 1967 and is the only painting by Leonardo in North America.
4. Alba Madonna - A painting by the Italian Renaissance painter Rafael,discount lacoste shirts, depicting Mary, Jesus, and John the Baptist in the Italian countryside. John the Baptist is holding up a cross to Jesus, which the baby Jesus is grasping. This work remained one of the highlights of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg until it was acquired by Andrew Mellon,juicy couture purses, who donated it along with his collection to the National Gallery of Art.
5. Number 1, 1950 (Lavender Mist) - A work by Jackson Pollock,ed hardy clothing, an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract impressionist movement. Pollock's technique of pouring and dripping paint is thought to be one of the origins of the term action painting. Lavender Mist is one of Pollock's most important "drip" paintings. Pollock, who spoke of being "in" his paintings, left very literal traces of his presence in the multiple handprints at the upper edges of the canvas.
