Submitted 2011-03-24 16:18:47 It is possible to cool and heat a home with geothermal power. This energy source produces no greenhouses gases and is available in virtually limitless amounts unlike fossil fuels. A well designed system will be economically competitive with other kinds of power and operate efficiently. It can be employed almost anywhere from arctic latitudes to down on the equator.
All over the globe, the temperature of the earth will be somewhere in the fifties at a depth of eight feet. From an engineering perspective, this form of energy doesn't produce heat, it simply moves it. A temperature not far from what is considered optimum can be found by just digging down a few feet.
You can certainly reach the comfort zone if it is too hot where you are. If it is too cold, you will only need to add a small amount of heat to what can be taken out of the earth. Unlike wind and solar systems that often can't run at all or operate at diminished capacity, geothermal power is always there, and the level never varies.
The three main parts of geothermal devices use in the home are ground loop, heat pump, and heat distributor. Plastic piping is inserted into the ground forming the ground loop. Through the piping flows a mixture of anti-freeze and water. The heat pump takes out the warmth from this flow and sends it to a distribution unit which can be either a variant of radiant heating or forced air.
To cool, this network is run in reverse. Air coils in a forced air unit take the heat out of a house the same way that evaporator coils do in air conditioners and transfer it to the liquid running through the pipes where it is transferred into the earth.
The simplest installations of this energy form take place during the home's original construction. In already built houses, jordan shoes shop, problems may occur is there is not enough room in a yard for the pipes. Special adaptations will need to be made, but systems can be designed to fit. The only danger to them comes from earthquakes. Otherwise, they need little maintenance and will probably last a considerable time.
There are a number of advantages and disadvantages associated with this alternative source. One of the main advantages is that it does not impact the environment negatively. There are no harmful substances that are emitted into the atmosphere. The power plants are also designed to ensure that they are also environmentally friendly.
This type of power resource can not be exhausted because it is constantly being produced deep within the surface of the earth. Therefore the steam will always be more than enough as long as it can be harnessed. It is also quite effective because the costs are relatively low.
A geothermal heat pump system will typically lower the heating bill of home 70%. Savings of 50% or more will be realized in cooling. Hot water costs will be reduced by a third. The energy inside the earth is regard as renewable. No pollutants are emitted when using this power source. |
