The Kilombero River is located in Southwestern Tanzania. This river is actually a part of the Kilombero district in the Morogoro Region. The river is a part of the Kilombero Game Controlled Area which is located within the Kilombero Valley. This controlled area has a land area of 5600 square kilometers. The Kilombero Valley is located West of the Selous Game Reserve.
While the Kilombero Game Controlled Area is famous for the greatest population of buffalos, it has also maintained large populations of other varieties of large mammals as well, including the puku antelope. For amazing varieties of bird species though, the Kilombero River provides one of the best birding sights in Africa. The forest area on the eastern bank of the Kilombero River is relatively large, such that many colorful birds can be observed on this part of the controlled area.
The best way of birding on the Kilombero River is by canoes. Birds of different colors, size,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and specie can be easily spotted on a canoe as it slowly drifts through the river. Moreover, aside from the birds, there are many other animals that can be conveniently observed aboard a canoe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including crocodiles.
One of the most dominant bird species along the river is the White Fronted Bee Eaters. These vibrant birds make their nests on the mud along the river banks, which is such a beholding sight to see. Since the Kilombero valley is identified as an endemic bird area, a great amount of bird diversity is manifested around this area.
Since the best way for bird watching in Kilombero is by a canoe, most safari packages include camping at the fishing village of Mikeregembe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and canoeing along the Kilombero River towards the valley. The best time for bird watching is between the months of July to January of the following year, since the area is inaccessible between match to June.
Getting to the Kilombero River is not really difficult. The valley is accessible by road from the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Moreover, African safaris provide the best stop over trips on the way to the Kilombero Valley including the Selous Game Reserve and the Udzungwa Mountains National Park.
Therefore for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts, Kilombero Valley is one of the best places for birding, because of the large number of bird diversities that can be conveniently spotted along the Kilombero River on board a canoe.
