Submitted 2011-03-24 16:20:13 With the continued developments in nicotine replacement therapy, quitting smoking is easier than ever before. Now, smokers who are looking to end their habit do not have to suffer the same nicotine withdrawal effects as was once the norm, and therefore the chances of quitting for good are higher than ever.
However, if you are looking to quit smoking and are planning on using a form of nicotine replacement therapy, don't think that's the battle already won. It might sound discouraging, but when you're planning to quit it's important you're furnished with the truths of what you may experience - that way, you won't be surprised when they occur. By being prepared, you can fight the battles when they come.
While nicotine replacement therapy goes a long way to aiding a smoker in quitting, it doesn't do the whole job for them. The key word here is 'aids'; NRTs are aids to help people quit smoking, but they are not the be all and end all in and of themselves. Even if you are using NRTs - and it really is advisable that you do so - you are still going to suffer some nicotine withdrawal, as well as trying to reconfigure your life to exclude social smoking. It's still not going to be pleasant.
The idea is that NRTs are there to get you through the first few weeks after you stop smoking; as the first few weeks are the most difficult. When that period is over,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you're going to need to go it alone, and you'll need a strong dose of willpower to do it. Use NRTs to get through the worst of the withdrawal, but then strike out on your own.
