Submitted 2011-03-15 13:11:28 My name is Dr. Terry Zachary. In the mid-1990's I played professional golf. Don't worry, you probably haven't heard of me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! I played mini-tours only. But it was there that I solidified my belief about a contributory cause of tennis elbow - hand muscle imbalance! I saw so many professional players that suffered from tennis elbow largely due to poor or no hand exercise.
The players that exercised their hands used 'grip-only' items. The players that didn't exercise their hands gripped repetitively while playing and practising. Either way... hand muscle imbalance was the result. And it was rampant! To offset this imbalance and make hand muscle exercise complete and convenient, I developed the Handmaster Plus hand exercise system.
Hand muscle imbalance has classically been overlooked as a core factor in the cause of tennis elbow - and thus a convenient solution has never been made available. This is another reason that I developed Handmaster Plus - I could not find a device that would allow the hand to move through its full natural range of motion against resistance conveniently.
The only device that came close to accomplishing proper balanced hand muscle exercise was the old 'rice box' exercise (i.e. a box filled with rice). The rice box allowed the user to reach into the rice and squeeze, and then alternately open the hand fully against resistance of the rice; a perfect continuous motion with resistance in nearly all planes. The problem was convenience the rice box was too bulky to carry around,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Handmaster Plus mimics the rice box exercise, yet is super-portable.
The hand muscles are important to the elbow because both finger flexor and finger extensor muscles crossed the elbow joint. Thus, the balance between the two groups of muscles is vital to the stability of the elbow. When the hand muscles become imbalanced tennis elbow and golfer's elbow are both at high risk. Specific tennis elbow exercises including proper hand exercises are vital if you use your hands daily - especially if you grip.
It is also very key to note that the finger extensor muscles greatly stabilize the outside of the elbow. These finger extensor muscles contract strongly during grip activities (in the stabilization role) in support of the finger flexor or grip muscles.
The finger extensor muscles can easily become overused in a static position due to repetitive gripping - a hugely overlooked factor in tennis elbow exercises and rehab programs. If the finger muscles are weak or imbalanced, the elbow is unstable and the tennis elbow risk is VERY high.
Handmaster Plus strengthens and balances all of the hand muscles in one convenient exercise. No more excuses! Hand, wrist & forearm exercises are now too convenient,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
